The Rhode Island Manumissions Project is a genealogy tool dedicated to documenting the identities of slaves in the state of Rhode Island with the goal of finding manumission records.
The gradual abolition of slavery in Rhode Island began in the mid-1700s. Before the early 1800s, Rhode Islanders of African descent were responsible for building the state’s economy with free labor, but were mostly absent in town and vital records. Attitudes and morality about slavery began to shift due to religious beliefs and activism of abolitionist Quakers.
In a time period where the Black community consisted of both enslaved and free people, tracing one’s African American ancestors is partly achieved by browsing documents of their owners and paying close attention to mentionings of the word Colored, Negro, Slave, Mulatto, Mustee or Indian. While freedom was achieved in a variety of ways this project focuses on transcribing records documented in wills, probates and town council records.
